We made it to December! Given the events of 2020, this is not a comment made lightly. We are all exhausted from the turmoil this year has brought with it. From the pandemic that has destroyed any sense of normalcy we have come to known to the social unrest that has torn our nation apart, most of us are ready to just say goodbye to 2020 and start over.
Let us not say goodbye just yet! Let’s not go through these last few days in a haze just to say goodbye and good riddance to 2020. Rather, let us slow down and witness the magic of the season.
Yes, you read that right, slow down. For me, this season has always been a magical time of the year. It’s the time of the year where joy is prevalent everywhere you go. It is the time of the year where broken relationships are mended, and new bonds are formed. It is the time of the year where the unexpected happens. However, if you do not slow down, you will miss every magical moment.
The magic of the season is found in the little moments and the memories you create. It is the wow moment when you finished decorating your tree and declare it looks better than last year (even though you used the same decorations). It is the laughter you share with a friend over cocktails reminiscing about the Christmas parties of the past. It is in the cuddle time you get with a loved one by the fire. It is in the laughter you create when the kids are making cookies Santa and there is flour, dough and frosting everywhere.
These moments can be missed easily if you allow yourself to be distracted with the hustle and bustle of the holidays or weighed down with the heavy negativity from this year. Are you ready to make a pivot and allow more joy into your world?
Attend a Christmas tree lighting and take in the beauty of the moment. Don’t forget to bring some hot coco with you to keep you warm.
Grab your beau and go ice skating. Even if you do not know how, falling is part of the fun!
Curl up with a good Christmas book and get lost in a magical story.
Make some cookies for Santa, even if you don’t have kids! You will get to bake, decorate, and have some snacks for movie watching.
Speaking of movie watching, take a day off from work, slip into your favorite Christmas PJs and binge watch some of your favorite holiday movies.
Go through old holiday photos and take a trip down memory lane.
My personal favorite turn off the lights and take in the beauty of a room illuminated by your Christmas tree. Add a glass of wine and some Christmas music, and there is no place I would rather be!
Will this Christmas season be different? Absolutely. But different does not mean less than. You can still enjoy the magic of the season, but you must slow down and appreciate the present moment. The more you appreciate each moment, the more of these “special moments” will just magically appear!
Here’s to creating a season where you go back to the basics. A season where you rediscover what is profoundly important. A season where every day turns into a magical day and you create great memories to talk about years to come.
