Are You Ready for a DIY Project?

You were so excited when you started out. You knew exactly what you wanted the room to look like. You pinned your pictures, you picked out your décor and you even watched HGTV for some design inspiration. I mean if they can do it in an hour, how hard could it be right? Fast forward, and you find yourself standing in a room that looks like a construction zone rather than a room that should be in Better Home and Gardens. What happened?

Does this sound familiar? Could it be the story we all call life? Be honest, how many times did you set a goal just to find yourself 6 months later asking what happened? How did I end up here? This really did not go according to plan.

Let me ask another question, did you really have a plan, or did you just have a vision, and a toss pillow or two? So, what went wrong?

You lacked a detailed plan

The only way I know how to install a hardwood floor is one plank at a time! The same rules apply to life. A little progress each day adds up, and it is the easiest way to achieve your goals. You must take the big vision and break them down into monthly targets. Then take those monthly goals and break them down into weekly goals and your weekly goals into your daily to-dos. You get the point! This will ensure you are making small progress towards your goals daily. After 30 days of consistently working on your goals, you will have enough of the small wins to celebrate. And remember to celebrate each win!

You took shortcuts

Maybe you had a plan, but the details of the plan became too tedious. I mean, do you really need a second coat? Let me just say, every detail especially the smallest detail matters. When you find yourself wanting to take shortcuts just to get it done, DON’T! Take a break. Walk away from the project and come back to it later. 6 months from now, you will thank yourself.

You compromised on the non-negotiable

Did you go with a new carpet when you had your heart set on dark hardwood floors? Did you go with brushed nickel when you prefer oil rubbed bronze? And you did it all for the sake of saving a few bucks?

This is a big one. You had your vision, and you were working your plan, but you compromised on things that were important to you. At first, these compromises seemed small, but they will add up and completely change the outcome of your vision. Yes, it is true you should be flexible as you are working your plan, but compromise on the length of the curtains, not the color!

Alright, it is a start of a new month! 2020 has not gone according to anyone plans, but do not count it out just yet. With five months left, there is still some time to salvage this year. So, drag out those color swatches, paint brushes and demo tools and let’s remodel 2020.
